The Corporation of Brown University approves the appointment of physics faculty to named chairs.

Last month, the Corporation of Brown University’s recognition of academic excellence included two physics faculty appointed to named chairs.

  • James Valles, Royce Family Professor of Teaching Excellence in Physics
  • Kemp Plumb, Christopher M. Barter Assistant Professor of Physics

In 2023, the Corporation approved the establishment of the Christopher M. Barter '90 Assistant Professorship with the generous support of Christopher M. Barter '90.

Christopher Barter is a managing partner of King River Capital, an Australian/US venture capital fund based in Sydney. King River invests in fintech, digital healthcare, decentralised finance, gaming and other highly disruptive software ventures. He was previously at Goldman Sachs for 19 years, based in Frankfurt, London and Moscow where he was the CEO of Russia and CIS from 2007 to 2012 responsible for the securities, investment banking and private equity investing activities. He originally joined Goldman Sachs in Frankfurt in 1993. He was named a managing director in 2000, made partner in 2004, and served on the Firmwide Growth Markets Operating Committee. Chris is a member of the boards of Ariadne Pty Ltd, CoverGenius, FinClear, Splash, Kippax Property, CNG Fuels and Cici Environmental Trust. He is also a member of the Audit and Risk Committee for Bush Heritage. Mr. Barter earned a BSc in physics and a BA in Russian literature from Brown University and an MSc in physics from Harvard University.
