The Physics Department at Brown University has established an annual award for distinguished alumni of the department. Recipients are nominated based on their contributions in any field of work. Recipients of undergraduate and graduate degrees are eligible. Awards are presented at the yearly commencement ceremony.
José earned his ScB and ScM in Physics from Brown University, where he is a Trustee of the Brown Corporation Governance Committee.
His portfolio of international entrepreneurial activities includes projects in Cambridge (ITH Fund), Cuba (Miami Dade College), Portugal (MIT), Italy (TT Ventures), Japan (Schlumberger), and Russia: José was part of the MIT team that established the Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology -‐a graduate school the size of Cal Tech-‐in Moscow, Russia, where he became Dean of International Research. José has been an active contributor to the MIT Deshpande Center for Technological Innovation since 2007 and is a mentor at the Harvard Business School’s capstone entrepreneurship course (Field X).
José volunteers extensively for organizations that create leadership opportunities for underrepresented minorities at the high school, college, post-graduate levels, and industry, including, Brown University, Vertex Corporation External Diversity Advisory Council, Boston-based Conexión, and is a founding member of Miami Dade College’s Idea Center Board of Advisors.
Warren Galkin graduated from Brown University with an ScB in Physics in 1951. He went on to graduate from The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania with an MBA. He spent three years in the Navy as an engineering officer, followed by nineeen in the reserves. He retired as a lieutenant commander. Warren began working at Natcos, a company in which his father started in 1917. Along with the work of his brother and sister-in-law, Natco became an international company with factories in China, Canada, and three U.S. states. Later, Warren became vice chairman of the board of Natco.
Warren is a benefactor of the Boys and Girls Club of Warwick and was the first inductee in its Hall of Fame. He established physics and brain science fellowships at Brown, including the Galkin Foundation Fellowship which is awarded each academic year to one outstanding senior graduate student in the Department of Physics. He funds a scholarship in the Spanish department at Community Preparatory School, is a major supporter of the John F. Kennedy Museum, and received the Common Cause Distinguished Service Award. In 2017, he was inducted into the Rhode Island Heritage Hall of Fame.
Brown Affinity Groups are supported by the Brown Alumni Association Board of Governors. Groups’ leadership work to engage and reconnect alumni of color to Brown and to each other in vital and meaningful ways that strengthen the mission of the University and enrich the Brown community.
