The Physics Department welcomed industry leaders, researchers, students, and members of the public to “Physics and Our World,” featuring Thorlabs, a three-day celebration of physics, photonics, astronomy, and interdisciplinary collaboration held April 29 through May 1.
The event brought together hands-on demonstrations, public outreach, workshops, live music, lectures, and scientific discussion designed to highlight the many ways physics shapes and informs the world around us.
Over the course of three days, both the Brown community and the public participated in interactive experiences ranging from photonics workshops and physics demonstrations to solar observation sessions led by astronomers Bob Horton, manager of Ladd Observatory, and Mahmoud Hallak, instructional laboratory specialist and astronomer. Using specialized sun spotters, attendees were able to safely observe the sun while speaking directly with astronomers about solar science and observational astronomy.
The program also featured workshops hosted by the Thorlabs Mobile Photonics Lab for both the Brown and the Providence communities, providing participants with hands-on exposure to photonics and quantum optics technologies.
Events throughout the week included:
- Thorlabs Photonics Workshop in the Engineering Research Center.
- Physics outreach programming with refreshments provided by Women in Physics.
- Physics demonstration shows.
- Public solar observation sessions.
- Physics poster session in the Engineering Research Center.
- A closing main event featuring Prof. Stephon Alexander’s musical performance, lectures and a roundtable discussion.
“Physics and Our World” created opportunities for scientific engagement, interdisciplinary conversation and public outreach while showcasing the department’s collaborative and community-focused spirit.
