Some photos from a visit in August 2006
(for this summer school)
Glass is very much the theme:

The city grew up where the railway reached the pacific, in 1886 I was told. The very first steam engine is on display in a big glass box downtown. Reflected is one of the many new glass apartment buildings.
The smartest, and so glassiest, district is Coal Harbour:

Finally, two shots from West Broadway, overlooking the downtown almost-island:

A bunch of us went walking up Black Mountain: an hour's bus ride, then a vertical km in a forest, up to some spectacular views. Then down (on a ski resort road) into the dark.

For lots more pictures, see Claudia's (just the walk) and Michele's (the whole trip).
UBC must have planted a generation of bibliomaniacs, who are now donating libraries left right and centre. Below is the old main library, which is getting two new wings. The right hand one is under construction, the left is just finished. It contains an amazing multi-story robotic bookshelf, displayed through special windows:

The other new library. This one has ordinary human- and book-sized bookshelves. (The two buildings face each other: the first photo above was taken from the steps of this one.)
The campus in general feels a lot like Wits, and not at all like Princeton or Brown. "More socialist" I said to someone, and got a confused stare... but I think it's a good description.

(more glass!)

This is the antropological museum, with "the world's best collection of Pacific northwest artifacts".
Finally, a few of Place Vainer, where we stayed:

I visited the Lowes, photos on another page...
