PURPOSE: To show the components of a force.
DESCRIPTION: Two pieces of wood are hinged together. A stout string is fastened between two blocks of notched wood. With the hinged pieces placed in the notches the hinged joint is loaded with weight. The string may be broken by the application of a much smaller force than would be required by a direct pull.
EQUIPMENT: Components of force apparatus stored in mechanics. String stored in general use cabinet.
