ROLLING CHAIN 1D50.70

PURPOSE: To demonstrate the transition from slipping to rolling.

DESCRIPTION:  A flexible loop of chain is fitted onto a wheel and set to spin with a high speed AC motor.  When the chain is spinning very fast it is carefully worked off the wheel by use of a stick.  Once released, the chain has very high rpm's and its rapid motion will cause it to initially slip/skid in place, showing sliding friction without translation.  Eventually, the rolling chain will grab the floor and translation from rolling friction will take place.  The chain is seen to translate across the floor undergoing pure rotation without slipping like a rigid wheel.

This demo is potentially dangerous and must only be performed by the demonstration technician.

EQUIPMENT:  The chain and wheel with motor are stored in mechanics. A wooden stick is on the wood shelf.

SETUP NOTES:  A holder must be assembled using rods, clamps and a base.  A board must be set onto the floor.
