PURPOSE: To demonstrate the force on a current-carrying wire in a magnetic field.
DESCRIPTION: A wire dangles freely between the pole tips of a strong magnet.
When the current flows in the wire in the proper direction the wire will jump from between
the pole tips. Reverse the
current in the wire or turn the magnet upside down and the wire will be pulled downward.
EQUIPMENT: Suspended wire, power supply, knife switch, strong permanent magnet.
SETUP TIME: 1 hour.
