PURPOSE: To show the magnetic field of a solenoid.
DESCRIPTION: A solenoid is placed on the overhead and current is supplied by a power supply. Iron filings are sprinkled to show that there is a uniform field inside the coil and no field outside the coil. Also, the diverging field around the end of the solenoid is shown.
EQUIPMENT: The filings are stored in the elctricity and magnetism cabinet. The coil is stored in drawer marked current carrying wire.
