PHYS1280
Introduction to Astrophysics & Cosmology
  [ Course Website ]

Textbooks:

M. Berry, Principles of Cosmology and Gravitation (Adam Hilger, 1989)

A. Liddle, An Introduction to Modern Cosmology (Wiley, 1999)

The focus of this class will be on Modern Cosmology. Using as prerequisites only calculus and basic physics, an introduction to the theory of curved space-time will be given. The first major application will be to Black Holes. After giving a brief overview of the basics of particle physics, the standard Big Bang Model will be discussed. Later parts of the class will cover modern theories of the origin of Large Scale Structure in the Universe.

Course Outline:

  • Discovering the Cosmos
  • Physical Basis of General Relativity
  • Curved Space-Time
  • Tests of General Relativity and Black Holes
  • The Dynamics of the Universe
  • A Brief Introduction to Particle Physics
  • The Primordial Universe
  • The Inflationary Universe
  • Structure Formation
  • Stellar Evolution, White Dwarfs and Neutron Star
